ポポロ広場 は、ローマにある広場。巡礼者のローマへの入口に当たる。ポポロは「市民」の意味。
Piazza del Popolo
This oval-shaped square sits at the northern edge of Rome's historic centre, where three straight streets — Via del Corso, Via di Ripetta and Via del Babuino — fan out toward the city. In the centre stands an Egyptian obelisk, and the square is framed by twin domed churches at its southern entrance and, in the northeast corner, the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, which houses paintings by Caravaggio. It's a place to walk through, sit for a coffee, or use as an orientation point before heading into the centre along one of the three radiating streets.
Getting there
From central Rome it's an easy walk from most points near the Tiber or the Spanish Steps, generally 10-20 minutes on foot. It's also reachable by bus or on foot from Flaminio metro station (Line A), a few minutes' walk away.
How long to stay
Allow 30-45 minutes to see the square and obelisk, longer if you go into Santa Maria del Popolo or want to climb up to the Pincio terrace overlooking the piazza for the view.
When to go
The square is open and sunlit with little shade, so midday in summer can be uncomfortable. Early morning or early evening tends to be quieter and cooler; the piazza is a popular passing-through point, so it fills with people through the afternoon and evening, especially on weekends.
Combine with
The Mausoleum of Augustus and Ara Pacis are both about 0.5km away, an easy stop on the way toward the Tiber. Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps are about 0.7km in the other direction, reachable via Via del Babuino, making it simple to link the two squares into one walk.
