Piazza di Spagna
スパーニャ広場／スペイン広場 は、イタリア共和国ローマ市の中心街にある広場。「スパーニャ」とは「スペイン（エスパーニャ）」のイタリア語呼称で、間近にあるスペイン大使館にちなんで命名された。広場の中央には、ジャン・ロレンツォ・ベルニーニ作「バルカッチャの噴水（舟の噴水）」がある。東には後述の大階段がある。西側はコルソ通りに向けてコンドッティ通りがある。
Piazza di Spagna
Piazza di Spagna is a wide, elongated square at the base of the Spanish Steps, one of the fixed reference points of central Rome's tourist circuit. Most visitors come to sit on or photograph the steps, look at the boat-shaped Barcaccia fountain at their foot, and see the Column of the Immaculate Conception, which stands near the square and is decorated with flowers by the fire brigade each December 8th. The area is also lined with high-end fashion boutiques, so it doubles as Rome's main shopping street.
Getting there
The square has its own metro stop, Spagna, on Line A, making it one of the easiest central sights to reach directly by public transport. From the Colosseum or Termini station, allow roughly 20-25 minutes by metro or taxi; on foot from the Trevi Fountain it's about 10-15 minutes through pedestrian streets.
How much time to allow
Seeing the square, fountain and steps takes 20-30 minutes. If you plan to walk up the steps to the Trinità dei Monti church for the view, or to browse the surrounding shopping streets, budget an hour or more.
When to go
The square and steps get very crowded during the day, especially in spring and summer and around midday. Early morning is noticeably quieter and better for photos. Sitting on the steps themselves is restricted in some areas, so check for posted signs on arrival.
Combine it with
- The Spanish Steps themselves (0.1km) are effectively part of the same visit.
- Mausoleum of Augustus (0.5km) and the nearby Ara Pacis (0.5km) make for a short walk covering ancient and Augustan Rome.
- Piazza del Popolo (0.7km) is a pleasant extension, reachable on foot via Via del Babuino.
