厚別川
Atsubetsu River
厚別川（あつべつがわ、あしりべつがわ）は、北海道札幌市および江別市を流れる石狩川水系豊平川の最大の支流で、一級河川である。札幌では2番目に長い川で、長さは41kmある。
About Atsubetsu River
The Atsubetsu River runs through the Atsubetsu ward on Sapporo's eastern side, a quiet waterway lined with grassy banks and a paved path used by local residents for walking and cycling. It's not a sightseeing destination in itself so much as a pleasant stretch of green space to pass through — a place to slow down, watch the water, and get a feel for a residential part of Sapporo away from the downtown core.
Getting there
From central Sapporo (Odori or Sapporo Station), the river is reachable in roughly 30-40 minutes by a combination of subway and bus, or about 20-25 minutes by car or taxi depending on which stretch of the river you're heading to. There's no single "entrance," so it helps to pick a specific bridge or park segment along the river as your destination beforehand.
How much time to allow
An hour or so is enough for a walk along a section of the riverside path. If you plan to combine it with cycling further along the water, allow closer to two hours.
When to go
Mornings or late afternoons are quieter and more comfortable for walking. Spring brings fresh greenery along the banks, while winter conditions can make the paths icy, so check underfoot conditions if visiting between December and March. This is a low-key local spot rather than a crowded attraction.
Combine it with
- Moerenuma Park (2.3km) — a large landscaped park, an easy add-on before or after the river.
- Sapporo Satoland (3.6km) — a farm-park area good for families, within reasonable driving distance.
- Fushiko River (7.8km) and Hassamu River (8.6km) — similar riverside walking routes elsewhere in the city, worth considering if you enjoy this kind of green corridor.
