Sapporo Harisutosu Seikyōkai
札幌ハリストス正教会（さっぽろはりすとすせいきょうかい）は、日本ハリストス正教会に所属する正教会の教会である。
What it is
The Sapporo Harisutosu Seikyōkai is a Russian Orthodox church in central Sapporo, one of the oldest Orthodox congregations in Japan and a reminder of the city's ties to Russia during the Hokkaido settlement era. Travellers visit for the modest wooden and stone church architecture, which is distinct from the Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines that dominate most of Japan's religious sites, and for the quiet, unhurried atmosphere of the grounds.
Getting there
The church sits in central Sapporo, within walking distance or a short taxi or subway ride from the city centre, generally around 15-20 minutes depending on your starting point. If you're arriving from New Chitose Airport (CTS), you'll first need to reach central Sapporo by train (roughly 40 minutes), then continue on to the church.
Time to allow
Most visitors spend 20-30 minutes here, enough to view the exterior, step inside if the church is open to visitors at the time, and take in the small surrounding grounds.
When to go
This is a low-key stop with no significant crowds to plan around. Weekday mornings or early afternoons tend to be the quietest, since services and community events can bring more activity at other times. As with any active place of worship, dress and behave respectfully, especially if a service is in progress.
Combine it with
The church is close enough to other Sapporo religious sites to pair easily with a short walking or taxi route: Sapporo Japan Temple (3.4km) and Sapporo Gokoku Shrine (4.8km) both make for a contrast in architectural styles within the same city. For a change of scenery, Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill (2.3km) and Mount Tenjin (3.1km) offer outdoor viewpoints not far away.
