ジョホール・シンガポール・コーズウェイ
Johor–Singapore Causeway
What it is
The Johor–Singapore Causeway is the 1.056-kilometre road-and-rail link joining Woodlands in Singapore to Johor Bahru in Malaysia. It's not a sightseeing spot in the usual sense — there are no viewing platforms or facilities — but it's one of the busiest land border crossings in the world, carrying around 350,000 travellers a day by car, motorcycle, bus and train, and it also carries a water pipeline between the two countries. Most visitors see it while actually crossing into or out of Malaysia, whether by car, bus, or the KTM shuttle train.
Getting there
From central Singapore, the Causeway checkpoint at Woodlands is about 20-30 minutes by car or taxi via the BKE/PIE expressways, depending on traffic. By MRT, take the North-South Line to Woodlands station, from where connecting buses and the Woodlands Train Checkpoint serve the crossing.
How much time to allow
If you're simply crossing to Johor Bahru, immigration clearance on both sides can take anywhere from a few minutes to well over an hour, so build in a wide margin rather than a fixed estimate. If you just want to see the Causeway itself, a short stop near the checkpoint is enough.
When to go
Traffic and queues are heaviest during weekday morning and evening rush hours, when many Malaysian commuters cross for work, and around public holidays and long weekends when leisure travel spikes in both directions. Crossing outside these peak windows, such as midday on a weekday, generally means shorter waits.
Combine it with
- Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque (2.1km) — just across the border in Johor Bahru, a natural stop right after crossing.
- Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve (4.6km) — a quieter nature stop on the Singapore side if you're staying local.
- Singapore Zoo (5.9km) — worth combining into a longer day out in the north of the island.
- Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (8.1km) — another nature option nearby if time allows.
