Qal’at al Bahrain

This archaeological site contains layers of ruins dating back to before the common era, serving as a remnant of the ancient Dilmun civilization. Visitors go here to explore the remains of what is considered the oldest fort in the Persian Gulf and to view the site's layout, which led to its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

Getting There

The fort is located in Al-Muharraq. From the city centre, the most practical way to reach the site is via taxi or rental car. The journey typically takes 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk through the ruins and view the onsite exhibits. This provides enough time to navigate the elevations of the fort and observe the archaeological layers.

When to Visit

Visit during the winter months when temperatures are lower, as the site is outdoors and exposed to the sun. Late afternoon is recommended to avoid peak heat and to see the ruins in softer light. The site can become crowded during local public holidays and weekends.

Nearby Attractions

The site can be combined with other local landmarks in Al-Muharraq. Depending on your transport, you can visit:

  • Almoayyed Tower (2.1km)
  • Nurana Islands (2.7km)
  • Abraj Al Lulu (3.8km)
