The Red Mosque

The Red Mosque is a ruined historic mosque located within the walls of Berat Castle in Albania. Visitors go here to see the architectural remains of the structure, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Historic Centre of Berat. It serves as a historical marker of the city's religious diversity within the citadel.

Getting There

The mosque is located inside the castle grounds. From Berat city centre, you must walk uphill to the castle entrance. The ascent takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes depending on your pace. Once inside the castle gates, the site is accessible via the internal pedestrian paths.

Visit Duration

Because the site consists of ruins rather than an enclosed museum, most visitors spend about 15 to 30 minutes observing the structure and the surrounding area.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors and exposed to the elements. Visiting during the spring or autumn is recommended to avoid the peak summer heat. Early morning or late afternoon provides softer light for viewing the ruins. The castle area can become crowded during the peak tourist season.
