Overview

St. Mary of Blachernae Church is a Byzantine-era Albanian Orthodox church located in the castle quarter of Berat, Albania. Named after the Church of St. Mary of Blachernae in Constantinople, it stands on the site of an earlier 5th-century church. Visitors go to examine its Byzantine brickwork and surviving medieval interior frescoes.

Getting There

The church is situated inside the Berat Castle citadel. From the city center below, walking up the steep cobblestone path takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Taxis from the lower town reach the castle entrance in roughly 5 to 10 minutes.

Allow 20 to 30 minutes to view the building, inspect the interior artwork, and see the grounds.

When to Visit

Spring and autumn offer the most moderate temperatures for the walk. During summer, go in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat. Organized tour groups generally visit between late morning and early afternoon, making mornings quieter.
