Tas-Silġ
Tas-Silġ Archaeological Site
Located on a hill overlooking Marsaxlokk Bay, this site contains a layering of historical remains from different eras. It features megalithic temple structures from the Neolithic period, which were later repurposed as a sanctuary by the Phoenicians and subsequently used by the Romans. Visitors go here to see the transition of religious architecture and the physical evidence of Malta's early civilizations in one location.
Getting There
The site is located outside the center of Birgu. The most direct way to reach it is by taxi or rental car, which typically takes 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic. Public buses serve the general areas nearby, but a short walk or local transfer is usually required to reach the hilltop entrance.
Visit Duration
Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the ruins and view the archaeological remains. The site is compact, but the layout requires walking across uneven terrain.
When to Visit
Early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday sun, as there is limited shade across the ruins. The site is generally less crowded than the primary temple complexes in the center of the island, though it is more visited during the spring and autumn months.
