Għar Dalam

Għar Dalam is a 144-meter limestone cave located on the outskirts of Birżebbuġa. It is a national monument of Malta, primarily visited for its prehistoric significance. The site is known for the discovery of Pleistocene and Holocene animal fossils, providing evidence of the island's ancient fauna.

Getting There

The cave is located south of the main urban centers. From the center of Valletta or Birkirkara, the most direct way to reach the site is by rental car or taxi. The journey typically takes between 20 and 30 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Most visitors spend approximately 1 to 2 hours exploring the cave and the immediate surrounding area.

When to Visit

The cave provides natural shade, making it a viable visit during the warmer summer months. To avoid the midday heat of the Maltese sun during the walk to the entrance, morning or late afternoon visits are recommended. The site generally does not experience the same level of crowding as the primary temple complexes in the center of the island.
