Navigating the Ancient City

Bukhara's layout is divided between the historic old town and the newer administrative areas. Because the UNESCO World Heritage site is compact, the primary mode of transport within the center is walking.

Transport Modes

  • Walking: The best option for the old city. Most major landmarks, including the Po-i-Kalyan complex and the Ark Fortress, are within walking distance of each other.
  • Taxis: Essential for trips to the Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa Palace or the airport. Local taxis are ubiquitous; you can hail them on the street or use ride-hailing apps for transparent pricing.
  • Public Buses: Available for longer distances to the outskirts, though less convenient for tourists due to infrequent schedules and limited English signage.

Airport to City Center

Bukhara International Airport (BHK) is located a short distance from the city center. Options include:

  • Airport Taxis: Fast and low effort. These are available upon arrival and provide direct door-to-door service.
  • Ride-Hailing Apps: Moderate effort. Requires a local SIM card or Wi-Fi, but often provides a more standardized cost band.

Practical Travel Notes

  • Luggage: The old town features narrow, unpaved, or cobbled alleys. Large suitcases are difficult to maneuver; it is recommended to use taxis for transit between the airport and your accommodation.
  • Rush Hours: Traffic congestion typically peaks during morning and evening commutes in the newer parts of the city, though the pedestrianized old center remains unaffected.
  • Accessibility: Many historic sites and alleys lack ramps or paved surfaces, making them challenging for those with limited mobility or strollers.
  • Last Services: While taxis operate around the clock, public bus services cease late in the evening.
