City Layout and Districts

Bukhara is best understood as a city of two halves: the Old City and the modern administrative areas. For first-timers, the Old City is the primary focus. It is a pedestrian-friendly network of narrow alleys and mud-brick walls centered around the Lyabi-Hauz pond. The city is laid out linearly, with major monuments like the Po-i-Kalyan complex acting as anchors. Most historic sites are within walking distance of one another, though the perimeter of the old town is larger than it appears on a map.

Getting In and Around

Arrival: Most international visitors arrive via Bukhara International Airport (BHK). The airport is located outside the city center; the most efficient way to reach your accommodation is by pre-arranged transfer or a registered taxi.
Local Transport: Within the city, walking is the primary mode of transport for sightseeing. For longer distances, such as visiting the Ark Fortress or the outskirts, local taxis are readily available. Be sure to agree on the destination clearly before starting the journey.

Common First-Timer Mistakes

• Over-scheduling: Visitors often try to see every madrasah in one day. Instead, focus on the architectural clusters to avoid fatigue.
• Ignoring the Alleys: Many stick to the main roads. The true atmosphere of Bukhara is found in the side alleys where traditional silk and spice workshops are located.
• Dress Code: While Bukhara is welcoming, it is a traditional city. Dressing modestly, especially when entering religious sites, is expected.

Suggested First-Trip Itinerary

Priority Sights: Start with the Po-i-Kalyan Complex and the Ark Fortress to understand the city's power structure. Spend an afternoon at Lyabi-Hauz to experience the social heart of the old town.
Secondary Sights: Once the main landmarks are covered, visit the Samanid Mausoleum and the various trading domes (Toqi) for local crafts. These can wait until the second day once you have acclimated to the city's pace.
