How to navigate Dhaka for the first time

Understanding the City Layout
Dhaka is a dense, sprawling metropolis that is best understood by dividing it into functional zones rather than a strict grid.
- Old Dhaka: The historic heart. It is characterized by narrow alleys, traditional markets, and the majority of the city's 700+ mosques. This is where you experience the city's heritage.
- Gulshan and Banani: The modern diplomatic and commercial hubs. These areas feature wider roads, embassies, and contemporary dining.
- Dhanmondi: A residential and cultural district known for its greenery and cafes.
Arrival and Transportation
Your entry point is Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC). Upon arrival, the most reliable way to reach your accommodation is via a pre-paid airport taxi or a ride-sharing app.
Once inside the city, transport is varied:
- Cycle Rickshaws: The iconic mode of transport for short distances. They are ideal for navigating the narrow lanes of Old Dhaka.
- Ride-Sharing: Apps are the standard for mid-to-long distance travel between districts to avoid negotiating fares.
- CNGs (Auto-rickshaws): Faster than rickshaws but less maneuverable in heavy traffic.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
Mistake: Attempting to cross the city during peak rush hour. Dhaka's traffic is among the most congested in the world.
Solution: Plan your movements around the traffic peaks. Group your activities by district so you only have to make one major cross-city trip per day.
Mistake: Underestimating the sensory intensity of Old Dhaka.
Solution: Start your visit in Gulshan or Dhanmondi to acclimate before heading into the high-density environment of the old city.
Suggested First-Trip Itinerary
For a balanced first visit, prioritize these experiences:
- Essential: A visit to Ahsan Manzil (the Pink Palace) and a walk through the markets of Old Dhaka.
- Essential: Exploring the mosques and architectural landmarks in the city center.
- Secondary: Shopping in the modern malls of Banani or visiting the National Parliament House (Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban) for its unique architecture.
