Navigating Kotor: Bay Layout and Districts

Kotor sits against sheer limestone mountains at the head of the Bay of Kotor. Orient yourself using three main zones:

  • Old Town (Stari Grad): The walled medieval core. Pedestrian-only, it holds historic squares, Saint Tryphon Cathedral, and narrow alleys.
  • Dobrota: The shoreline stretching north of the walls. It offers a waterfront path, swimming pontoons, and quieter dining.
  • Muo and Škaljari: Škaljari lies just south, hosting the intercity bus station. Muo sits across the water to the west.

Arrival from Podgorica and Getting Around

Podgorica Airport (TGD) is inland across the mountains. Without rail links, travel by road via taxi, private transfer, or by taking a taxi into Podgorica to board an intercity bus. Coaches terminate in Škaljari, an easy walk south of Old Town.

Inside the walls, motorized traffic is banned. The polished stone paving becomes slick when damp, requiring supportive shoes. For travel along the bay to Dobrota or Perast, use local buses or metered taxis boarded outside the main gate.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Climbing the fortress midday: The exposed stone path up to Saint John Fortress has no shade. Hike at sunrise or late afternoon instead.
  • Driving around the bay: The single two-lane road bottlenecks severely during peak seasons. Walk or use local transit instead of renting a car for local hops.

Sensible Shape for a First Visit

Begin early inside Old Town and explore Saint Tryphon Cathedral before crowds peak. Climb the ramparts or fortress trail in the morning cool. Later, head outside the walls along the Dobrota promenade or take a short bus to Perast. Day trips into Mount Lovćen can wait for later days.
