KV12
Overview
KV12 is an ancient rock-cut tomb located in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor. Originally constructed during the 18th Dynasty and reused during the 19th and 20th Dynasties, it features an unusual architectural plan. The original owner remains unidentified, and evidence indicates it likely served as a collective burial site for multiple members of the royal family. Travellers visit to study its unique multi-chambered layout and dynastic reuse rather than decorated wall reliefs.
Getting There
The site is situated on the West Bank of the Nile, across from central Luxor. From the city centre, travellers can cross the river by ferry and take a local taxi, or drive directly via the southern bridge. The trip from downtown Luxor takes approximately 40 to 50 minutes by road.
Time to Allow
Allow around 20 to 30 minutes to explore the interior of the tomb. Spending time across the broader Valley of the Kings complex typically requires 2 to 3 hours.
When to Visit
The necropolis gets crowded from mid-morning onwards with arriving tour buses. Early morning is the best time of day to visit for fewer crowds and lower temperatures. The cooler months between October and April are preferable to the extreme heat of the summer season.
