Fort Santo Domingo

Located in Tamsui, this historic site is a former fortification that reflects multiple colonial periods. Originally established by the Spanish in 1628 and subsequently rebuilt by the Dutch, the site later functioned as a British consulate. Visitors go here to see the architectural layers and artifacts left behind by these different European powers.

Getting There

The fort is located in New Taipei City, accessible from the Taipei city centre via the MRT Red Line to Tamsui Station. From the station, you can reach the site by bus or by walking along the waterfront. The total travel time from the city centre typically takes around 60 to 90 minutes.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the grounds, view the interior rooms, and examine the remaining fortifications.

When to Visit

Visiting during the early morning or late afternoon helps avoid the midday heat. The site often becomes crowded on weekends and public holidays. Because it is an outdoor site, avoid days with heavy rain.

Nearby Attractions

You can combine a visit to the fort with other nearby locations in the Tamsui area:

  • Tamsui River (1.3km): A short walk for riverside views.
  • Mount Guanyin (4.4km): For those seeking a hike and higher elevation.
  • Guandu Temple (7.1km): A traditional religious site.
  • Keelung River (7.6km): Another waterfront option for exploration.
