Tamsui River

The Tamsui River is a 159 km waterway that flows through northern Taiwan before emptying into the Taiwan Strait. Travelers visit the riverfront areas, particularly in the Tamsui district, for riverside walks, ferry crossings, and views of the estuary where the river meets the sea.

Getting There

From central Taipei, the most direct route is via the Red Line (Tamsui-Xinyang Line) of the MRT. The journey to the Tamsui station takes approximately 40 to 50 minutes. From the station, the riverfront is accessible by a short walk.

Time Allocation of Time

Depending on the activities planned, allow 3 to 5 hours. This provides enough time to walk along the promenade, take a ferry trip, or explore the local waterfront markets.

When to Visit

Late afternoon is a common time to visit to observe the sunset over the water. The area becomes crowded on weekends and public holidays, particularly during the evening hours. Avoid visiting during the peak of the typhoon season if heavy rain is forecast.

Nearby Attractions

The riverfront is situated close to several other sites of interest. You can combine a visit with the following:

  • Fort Santo Domingo (1.3km)
  • Mount Guanyin (4.1km)
  • Guandu Temple (7.5km)
  • Keelung River (8km)
