Omotesandō
Omotesandō (表参道) is a zelkova tree-lined avenue located in Shibuya and Minato, Tokyo, stretching from the Meiji Shrine entrance to Aoyama-dōri, where Omotesandō Station can be found.
What it is
Omotesandō is a broad, zelkova-lined avenue running between the entrance to Meiji Jingū and Aoyama-dōri. It's known for architecture as much as shopping: flagship stores for international fashion brands occupy buildings designed by well-known architects, and side streets branching off the main avenue (often called Ura-Hara) hold smaller boutiques, cafés and galleries. It's a place to walk and browse rather than a single sight to check off.
Getting there
Omotesandō Station, served by the Chiyoda, Ginza and Hanzōmon lines, sits at the Aoyama-dōri end. From central Tokyo hubs like Shinjuku or Tokyo Station, expect roughly 20-30 minutes by train. The avenue can also be reached on foot from Meiji Jingū's entrance, about a 15-20 minute walk along the tree-lined street.
How much time to allow
An hour or two covers a walk down the main avenue and a few shops; half a day allows time to wander the side streets and stop for coffee or a meal.
When to go
Weekends and afternoons draw large crowds, especially on the main avenue and around the Takeshita-dōri end near Harajuku. Weekday mornings are quieter. Winter evenings are notable for illuminated trees along the avenue.
What to combine it with
- Meiji Jingū (1.7km) pairs naturally, as the avenue leads directly to its entrance.
- Yoyogi Park (1.5km) is a short walk away for a break from shopping crowds.
- National Art Center, Tokyo (1.3km) and Roppongi (1.7km) suit a longer day combining art and dining.
