Yoyogi Park
Yoyogi Park is a park in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. It is located adjacent to Harajuku Station and Meiji Shrine in Yoyogikamizonochō. The park is a popular Tokyo destination, especially on Sundays when it is used as a gathering place for Japanese rock music fans, jugglers, comedians, martial arts clubs, cosplayers and other subculture and hobby groups. In spring, thousands of people visit the park to enjoy the cherry blossom during hanami. The landscaped park has picnic areas, bike paths, cycle rentals, public sport courts, and a dog run.
Yoyogi Park
Yoyogi Park is one of the larger green spaces in central Tokyo, known less for manicured scenery than for what happens on its lawns and paths, especially on weekends. Sundays draw rock bands, dance crews, jugglers, martial arts groups and cosplayers who informally claim different corners of the park, making it as much a people-watching spot as a place to walk or picnic. There are wide lawns, cycling paths with rental bikes, a dog run, and public sports courts, so it works equally well for an active visit or a slow one.
Getting there
The park sits next to Harajuku Station and is easily reached from central Tokyo by train, generally 15-25 minutes from areas like Shinjuku or Shibuya. Meiji Shrine and its forested approach border the park on one side, so many visitors walk between the two.
How much time to allow
An hour or two covers a walk through the main lawns and paths. On a Sunday with performers out, allow closer to two or three hours if you want to stop and watch.
When to go
Weekends, particularly Sunday afternoons, are when the park is liveliest with subculture groups and performers, but this also means it gets crowded. Weekday visits are quieter and better suited to just walking or picnicking. In spring, the cherry blossoms bring large crowds for hanami, so expect busy paths and lawns during that period.
Combining with nearby sights
- Meiji Jingū (0.5km) is close enough to visit in the same outing, and its wooded grounds contrast with the park's open lawns.
- Omotesandō (1.5km) and the NTT Docomo Yoyogi Building (1.5km) are both a short walk or ride away for a shift toward shopping and city streets.
- Tokyo Mosque (2km) can be added if you're continuing further into the surrounding neighborhoods.
