Transport Modes in Trondheim
Trondheim is a compact city where the choice of transport depends on your destination relative to the city center (Midtbyen).
- Walking: The most efficient way to explore the historic center, the Nidaros Cathedral area, and the Bakklandet neighborhood.
- Buses: Operated by AtB, the bus network is the primary mode for reaching residential areas and the university.
- Taxis: Available for direct point-to-point travel, though significantly more expensive than public transit.
Tickets and Passes
The AtB app is the standard for purchasing single tickets and period passes. Digital tickets are preferred over cash.
- Single Tickets: Best for occasional travelers or those staying in the center.
- Period Passes: Suitable for visitors staying several days who plan to visit outskirts or the university campus.
- Note: These passes do not suit those who intend to stay exclusively within the walkable city core.
From Trondheim Airport (TRD) to City Center
The airport is located in Værnes, outside the city limits.
- Airport Bus (Flybussen): High frequency and direct routes to the center. Moderate cost, low effort, and reliable timing.
- Train (SJ Nord): Often the fastest option to Trondheim Central Station. Moderate cost and low effort.
- Taxi: Highest cost, lowest effort, and fastest for door-to-door delivery to specific addresses.
Practical Travel Notes
- Rush Hours: Expect congestion on main arteries during morning and afternoon commutes, affecting bus travel times.
- Last Services: Bus and train frequencies drop significantly late at night; check the AtB app for final departure times.
- Accessibility: Most buses and trains are equipped for wheelchairs and strollers.
- Luggage: Airport buses and trains have dedicated luggage areas; city buses have limited space during peak hours.
