Pragser Wildsee

Pragser Wildsee

The Pragser Wildsee, or Lake Prags, Lake Braies is a natural lake in the Prags Dolomites in South Tyrol, Italy. It belongs to the municipality of Prags which is located in the Prags Valley.

What it is

Pragser Wildsee (Lake Braies) is an alpine lake in the Prags Dolomites in South Tyrol, ringed by steep forested and rocky slopes. It sits within the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park. Most visitors come to walk the flat path around the shoreline and take in the color of the water against the surrounding peaks, and to rent one of the wooden rowing boats on the lake.

Getting there

The lake sits in its own side valley, away from any major town center, so there is no single "city center" starting point. In summer, a shuttle bus runs from the Prags valley (Val di Braies) up to the lake, since private car access and parking near the shore are limited during peak season. Outside the summer restrictions, it's reachable by car via a narrow road up the valley. Allow extra time in July and August for shuttle queues or parking searches farther down the valley.

Time to allow

Walking the full loop around the lake takes about an hour at an easy pace. Add extra time if you plan to rent a rowing boat or want to stop often for photos along the shore.

When to go

The lake draws heavy crowds in July and August, especially midday, when the shoreline path and boat rental can both have queues. Early morning is calmer and gives better light on the water. The lake is frozen for parts of winter, which changes the experience entirely.

Combine it with

Hohe Gaisl is the closest peak in the area, about 7.7 km away. Kronplatz, a larger mountain with lift access, is roughly 10.7 km away. Dürrensee, another lake, is about 13.3 km off, and the Drava river valley is around 13.2 km away — useful options for a day that pairs the lake with a hike or a second, quieter body of water.
