What it is
The Galleria dell'Accademia is a compact museum built around a single reason to visit: Michelangelo's David, displayed under a rotunda built specifically for it. Beyond the David, the collection includes Michelangelo's unfinished "Prisoners" (Prigioni) sculptures, a cast gallery, and Florentine paintings dating mostly from 1300 to 1600. Unlike the Uffizi, this is a small, focused museum rather than an all-day survey of Renaissance art.
Getting there
The museum sits in the historic center, an easy walk from Piazza del Duomo — about 10 minutes on foot. Most visitors arriving from central Florence simply walk; there's little reason to take a taxi or bus for such a short distance.
How much time to allow
Most visitors need 1 to 1.5 hours. The collection is small enough that you won't need a full morning or afternoon, though art lovers who linger over the paintings galleries may want closer to 2 hours.
When to go
The David draws consistent crowds, especially the rotunda area, and lines can build up quickly regardless of season. Arriving right when the museum opens or later in the afternoon tends to be calmer than midday. Peak tourist season (spring through early fall) makes the experience noticeably more crowded, so plan for some waiting if you visit then.
What to combine it with
The Museum of San Marco is just 0.1km away and pairs naturally with a morning of art-focused sightseeing. Santissima Annunziata (0.2km) and the National Archaeological Museum (0.3km) are also within a couple of minutes' walk, making this cluster easy to cover on foot. The Basilica of San Lorenzo (0.5km) is a bit further but still walkable, and works well as a next stop if you're heading back toward the Duomo area.
