What it is
The National Archaeological Museum holds one of Italy's major Egyptian collections outside Turin, alongside significant Etruscan and Greco-Roman material — statues, sarcophagi, bronzes, painted vases and jewelry. It's housed in the Palazzo della Crocetta, built in 1620 for a Medici princess. The draw is depth rather than a single famous piece: this is a place for people genuinely interested in Etruscan civilization or Egyptology, more than a quick photo stop.
Getting there
It sits on Piazza Santissima Annunziata in the historic centre, an easy walk of about 15-20 minutes from the Duomo or the train station, through streets with little need for transport.
How much time to allow
Plan on at least 1.5 to 2 hours to see the main collections properly; those with a strong interest in archaeology could easily spend half a day.
When to go
It draws far fewer crowds than the Uffizi or Accademia, so queuing isn't usually a major concern. Mornings tend to be quieter than afternoons, and it makes a good option on a day when the bigger museums are packed.
What to combine it with
- Santissima Annunziata (0.1km) — right on the same square, a natural first or last stop.
- Museum of San Marco (0.3km) — a short walk away, known for Fra Angelico's frescoes.
- Galleria dell'Accademia (0.3km) — nearby, home to Michelangelo's David, though expect longer queues there.
- Florence Cathedral (0.6km) — an easy extension of the same walk back toward the centre.
