Museum of San Marco
イタリアのフィレンツェのサン・マルコ広場に位置するサン・マルコ国立美術館（サンマルコこくりつびじゅつかん）は、元来ドメニコ会修道院であり、その一部を美術館として公開し、修道院に所縁の深い美術品を展示している。
What it is
The Museum of San Marco occupies the former Dominican convent where Fra Angelico lived and worked as a friar-painter in the 15th century. The main draw is the collection of frescoes he painted directly onto the walls of the monks' cells and the surrounding corridors, including the Annunciation at the top of the stairs. The building itself, with its cloister and chapter house, is part of the experience, not just a container for the art.
Getting there
From central Florence (around the Duomo), it's a walk of about 15-20 minutes north to Piazza San Marco. No bus or taxi is really necessary given the flat, compact layout of the historic centre.
Time to allow
Most visitors spend around 1 to 1.5 hours moving through the cells and cloister; the museum is not large, but the frescoes reward slow looking.
When to go
Mornings tend to be calmer than afternoons, especially outside peak tourist season (roughly June to August). Because the Accademia is just next door, tour groups often cluster in this part of the city, so arriving early can mean quieter corridors.
What to combine it with
- Galleria dell'Accademia (0.1km) — home to Michelangelo's David, essentially across the square.
- Santissima Annunziata (0.2km) — a short walk further, a working basilica with its own frescoed cloister.
- National Archaeological Museum (0.3km) — a quieter option for Etruscan and Egyptian collections.
- Basilica of San Lorenzo (0.6km) — a bit further on, worth pairing if you're spending a half-day in this part of Florence.
