醍醐寺
Daigo-ji Temple
醍醐寺（だいごじ）は、京都市伏見区醍醐東大路町にある真言宗醍醐派の総本山の寺院。山号は深雪山ないし笠取山。本尊は薬師如来。上醍醐の准胝堂（じゅんていどう）は、西国三十三所第11番札所で本尊は准胝観世音菩薩。京都市街の南東に広がる醍醐山（笠取山）に200万坪以上の広大な境内を持ち、国宝や重要文化財を含む約15万点の寺宝を所蔵している。豊臣秀吉による「醍醐の花見」が行われた地としても知られている。「古都京都の文化財」として世界遺産に登録されている。
What it is
Daigo-ji is a large Shingon Buddhist temple complex spread across two levels: Shimo-Daigo (Lower Daigo), a set of temple buildings and gardens at the base of the mountain, and Kami-Daigo (Upper Daigo), older halls higher up on Mount Daigo reached by a hiking trail. Shimo-Daigo includes a five-storied pagoda dating to the 10th century, considered one of the oldest wooden structures in the Kyoto area, along with the Sanboin sub-temple and its garden, built for a lavish cherry-blossom viewing party hosted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1598.
Getting there
From central Kyoto, take the Tozai subway line to Daigo Station, then walk roughly 10-15 minutes to the temple entrance. A taxi from downtown Kyoto takes about 20-25 minutes depending on traffic.
How long to allow
Budget at least 1.5 to 2 hours for Shimo-Daigo and the Sanboin garden. Add another 2-3 hours round trip if you plan to hike up to Kami-Daigo, which involves a steady uphill climb.
When to go
Cherry blossom season (late March to early April) draws large crowds, as the temple is well known for its sakura, and autumn foliage season also gets busy. Visiting on a weekday morning helps avoid the biggest crowds at Sanboin and around the pagoda. The hike to Kami-Daigo is more pleasant in cooler months, since there's little shade on parts of the trail.
Combine it with
Fushimi Castle is about 4.1km away and can be paired with a taxi or short transit ride. Fushimi Inari-taisha, roughly 4.6km off, is a natural next stop if you're spending a fuller day in the Fushimi area. Tōfuku-ji Temple (5km) and Kiyomizu-dera Temple (5.8km) are further options if you're working your way back toward central Kyoto.
