伏見稲荷大社
Fushimi Inari-taisha
伏見稲荷大社（ふしみいなりたいしゃ）は、京都府京都市伏見区深草薮之内町にある神社。式内社（名神大社）、二十二社（上七社）の一社。旧社格は官幣大社で、現在は単立神社となっている。
What it is
Fushimi Inari-taisha is the head shrine for Inari, dedicated to the kami of rice and prosperity, and the reason people visit is the mountain behind the main hall: a network of paths lined with thousands of vermilion torii gates, donated over time by individuals and businesses. Walking through the gates, past smaller sub-shrines and stone fox statues (Inari's messengers), is the actual experience, more than the shrine buildings at the base.
Getting there
From central Kyoto, the shrine is reached by JR Nara Line to Inari Station, a ride of around 5 minutes from Kyoto Station, with the entrance right outside the station. It's also accessible via the Keihan Main Line to Fushimi-Inari Station, a short walk from the shrine.
How much time to allow
Seeing the main gate area and the first stretch of torii takes well under an hour. Walking the full trail up Mount Inari and back is closer to two hours, though most visitors don't go all the way to the summit — you can turn back at any point once you've had enough of the climb.
When to go
The lower section near the entrance gets crowded, especially midday and on weekends, since it's easy to reach and popular with day-trippers. Crowds thin out noticeably the further up the mountain you go. Early morning or early evening tends to be quieter at the base.
Combining with nearby sights
- Tōfuku-ji Temple (0.9km) is close enough to pair with a visit here, especially if you're interested in temple gardens.
- Sanjūsangen-dō Temple (2.3km) and Kyoto National Museum (2.5km) sit near each other and can be combined into the same day.
- Kyoto Tower (2.6km) is near Kyoto Station, convenient to fit in before or after using the JR line here.
