三十三間堂
Sanjūsangen-dō Temple
三十三間堂（さんじゅうさんげんどう）は、京都市東山区三十三間堂廻町にある天台宗の寺院。本尊は千手観音。建物の正式名称は蓮華王院本堂（れんげおういんほんどう）。同じ京都市東山区にある妙法院の飛地境内であり、同院が所有・管理している。元は後白河上皇が自身の離宮内に創建した仏堂で、蓮華王院の名称は千手観音の別称「蓮華王」に由来する。洛陽三十三所観音霊場第17番札所。
What it is
Sanjūsangen-dō is a Tendai Buddhist temple in Kyoto's Higashiyama district, known for its long wooden hall lined with rows of standing Kannon statues, arranged around a large central seated figure. The visit is essentially walking the length of the hall and taking in the sheer number and repetition of the statues, which is what draws most visitors rather than the temple grounds themselves.
Getting there
From central Kyoto (Kyoto Station area), the temple is reachable by city bus or a short taxi ride, generally taking around 10-15 minutes. It's also walkable from the Kyoto National Museum area if you're already in that part of Higashiyama.
Time to allow
Most visitors spend roughly 30 to 45 minutes inside, mainly walking the hall and viewing the statues at your own pace.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter than afternoons. The hall can feel busy when tour groups pass through, so arriving earlier in the day makes it easier to move at your own pace and get a clearer view of the statues.
Combine with nearby sights
- Kyoto National Museum (0.3km) - close enough to pair on the same visit.
- Mimizuka (0.4km) - a short walk away for a quieter historical stop.
- Kyoto Tower (1.1km) - walkable, or a quick ride if you'd rather save your legs.
- Tōfuku-ji Temple (1.4km) - a bit further, worth planning as a separate leg of the day, especially if visiting during autumn foliage season.
