Kyoto Tower
Kyoto Tower is an observation tower built on top of a nine-story building that also houses a hotel and shops, standing directly across from Kyoto Station. The main reason to go up is the view: at 100 metres, the observation deck is the highest vantage point in a city where building heights are otherwise kept low, so you get an open look over Kyoto's grid of streets toward the surrounding hills, without any taller structure blocking the sightlines.
Getting there
It sits right outside Kyoto Station's central exit, so if you're already near the station it's a walk of a few minutes. From most other points in central Kyoto, take a train or bus back to Kyoto Station first, then walk over.
How long to spend
The observation deck itself doesn't take long to cover — most visitors are done in 30 to 45 minutes, including time to look around from different sides of the deck.
When to go
Since it's an indoor, elevator-accessed deck, weather matters more than season — clear days give the best visibility, while haze or rain can limit the view considerably. Late afternoon into early evening is worth considering if you want to see the city in daylight and then watch it light up after dark. As with many central Kyoto sights, expect more visitors around midday and on weekends.
Combine it with
Its location by the station makes it easy to pair with sights to the south and west. Higashi Hongan-ji and Nishi Hongan-ji temples are both an easy walk, with Nishi Hongan-ji about 0.9km away. Sanjūsangen-dō (1.1km) and Tō-ji (1.3km), known for its five-story pagoda, are also within walking distance, and Mimizuka (1.1km) can be folded into the same loop.
