京都国立博物館
Kyoto National Museum
京都国立博物館（きょうとこくりつはくぶつかん）は、独立行政法人国立文化財機構が運営する博物館。1897年（明治30年）5月に開館した。現館長は松本伸之。
Kyoto National Museum
This is Kyoto's main museum for pre-modern Japanese and Asian art: paintings, sculpture, ceramics, calligraphy and textiles, much of it drawn from temples and private collections around the region. It's a good stop if you want context on the religious art and craftwork you'll otherwise see only in temple settings, or if you want a break from shrine-hopping with something you can view up close and read about in depth.
Getting there
It sits in Higashiyama, on the east side of the city. From central Kyoto (around Kyoto Station or downtown Shijo-Kawaramachi), it's a short taxi ride or a bus ride of roughly 15-20 minutes. It's also walkable from the Higashiyama temple area if you're already in that part of town.
How long to spend
Plan on about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on how many special exhibitions are running and how closely you read the gallery notes. The permanent collection alone can be seen at a comfortable pace in under two hours.
When to go
Special exhibitions of famous works can draw large crowds, especially on weekends, so a weekday visit is calmer. The permanent collection galleries are generally quieter than the special exhibition wing. Being an indoor museum, it also works well as a plan for a hot or rainy day.
Combine it with
- Sanjūsangen-dō Temple (0.3km) - right next door, easy to pair in the same visit.
- Mimizuka (0.3km) - a small historic monument just a short walk away.
- Kiyomizu-dera Temple (1.2km) - a walkable extension into the Higashiyama hillside.
- Kyoto Tower (1.3km) - near Kyoto Station, useful if you're heading back that way afterward.
