西本願寺
Nishi Hongan-ji Temple
西本願寺（にしほんがんじ）は、京都市下京区本願寺門前町にある浄土真宗本願寺派の本山の寺院。山号は龍谷山（りゅうこくざん）。本尊は阿弥陀如来。正式名称は龍谷山本願寺、宗教法人としての名称は本願寺である。本願寺住職は浄土真宗本願寺派門主を兼務する。真宗大谷派の本山である東本願寺（正式名称「真宗本廟」）と区別するため、両派の本山は通称で呼ばれることが多い。京都市民からはお西さんの愛称でも親しまれている。また、「古都京都の文化財」の構成資産として、世界遺産に登録されている。
What it is
Nishi Hongan-ji is a working Buddhist temple in Shimogyō-ku that serves as the head temple of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha subsect of Pure Land Buddhism. It's one of two large Hongan-ji complexes in Kyoto, alongside Higashi Hongan-ji. Visitors come to see its large wooden halls, including the Goeido and Amidado, and to walk through a temple complex that still functions as an active religious site rather than a purely historical monument.
Getting there
The temple sits close to Kyoto Station, roughly a 15-minute walk north from the station's central or Karasuma exit. It's also reachable by city bus from the station in a few minutes if you'd rather not walk. Because of its proximity to the station, it's an easy stop right after arriving in or before leaving Kyoto.
How long to stay
Allow around 45 minutes to an hour to walk the grounds and view the main halls from outside and, where accessible, step inside. It's not a large sprawling complex, so it fits easily into a half-day itinerary alongside other nearby sights.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter, especially before tour groups arrive later in the day. The temple is far less crowded than more famous Kyoto sights like Kinkaku-ji or Fushimi Inari, making it a relatively calm stop even on a busy sightseeing day.
What to combine it with
Its location near Kyoto Station makes it easy to pair with other nearby sights. Tō-ji Temple is about 1.3km away and known for its pagoda, Kyoto Tower is under 1km away for a city view, and Sanjūsangen-dō Temple, with its hall of Buddhist statues, is roughly 1.9km away. Mimizuka, a smaller historical site, is about 1.7km away if you're interested in a quieter detour.
