Fushimi Castle
Fushimi Castle
Fushimi Castle, also called Momoyama Castle, is a reconstructed Japanese castle in Fushimi Ward, south of central Kyoto. The current concrete structure was rebuilt in the 20th century rather than being an original Edo- or Sengoku-period building, so it's worth visiting for the exterior, the hilltop grounds, and the surrounding park rather than for historically authentic interiors. It gives a sense of castle architecture and a quiet, green space away from the denser tourist areas of Kyoto.
Getting there
From central Kyoto, the castle is reached by local bus or a combination of train and a walk uphill, generally taking around 30 to 45 minutes one way depending on your starting point. It sits apart from Kyoto's main train lines, so allow extra time compared with more centrally located sights.
How much time to allow
Most visitors spend around one to two hours here, including time to walk the castle grounds and surrounding park. There isn't a large complex of buildings to work through, so it suits a shorter stop rather than a half-day visit.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter, and the site is far less crowded than central Kyoto landmarks, making it a reasonable option if you want to avoid peak crowds. The surrounding hillside has cherry trees, so spring can bring more visitors than other times of year.
Combining with nearby sights
Fushimi Castle pairs naturally with other spots in the Fushimi area. Fushimi Inari-taisha, known for its long trails of torii gates, is about 3.1km away. The Kamo River is roughly 3.7km off if you want a riverside walk, and Tōfuku-ji Temple is around 4km away. Daigo-ji Temple, about 4.1km from the castle, is another option if you're spending a full day exploring temples and historic sites in southern Kyoto.
