What it is

Solfatara is a shallow volcanic crater at Pozzuoli, part of the wider Phlegraean Fields volcanic area west of Naples. It last erupted around 1198, likely in a phreatic (steam-driven) event, and the ground still shows that activity: fumaroles hissing sulfurous steam and, historically, bubbling mud pools. The name itself comes from Latin for "land of sulfur." It's a stop for anyone curious about active volcanism up close, rather than a scenic overlook.

Getting there

Solfatara sits in Pozzuoli, west of central Naples. By car or taxi, the drive typically takes around 25-30 minutes depending on traffic. Public transport options include the Cumana rail line to Pozzuoli, followed by a short taxi or walk to the site.

Time to allow

An hour or so is usually enough to take in the crater floor and surrounding area at a walking pace.

When to go

Note that the crater floor itself has been closed to visitors since a fatal accident in 2017, so check current access before planning a visit centered on walking into the crater. Sulfur fumes are present throughout the site, which can be uncomfortable for those sensitive to strong smells.

Combine with

Solfatara is essentially inside the Phlegraean Fields volcanic area, so the two are effectively the same visit. The Vesuvius Observatory, which monitors this volcanic zone, is about 3.7km away and suits travellers interested in the science behind what they're seeing. The Cave of Dogs (2.4km) and the Bagnoli district (2.7km) are also within easy reach for a fuller day around Pozzuoli.
