トラヤヌスの記念柱
Trajan's Column
トラヤヌスの記念柱 は、イタリアのローマにあるモニュメントの1つで、ローマ皇帝トラヤヌスのダキア戦争での勝利を記念したものである。この柱は、元老院の依頼により、建築家ダマスカスのアポロドーロスの指揮で建設されたと言われている。位置はフォルム・ロマヌムの北、クイリナーレの丘付近に建設されたトラヤヌスのフォルムに所在する。113年に完成した独立した円柱で、ローマとダキアの間の戦争 を叙事詩的に描いたフリーズ（レリーフ）が円柱の表面に螺旋状に描かれていることでよく知られている。そのデザインは後の様々な記念柱で模倣されることになった。
Trajan's Column
This is the marble column the Roman Senate raised to celebrate Trajan's victories in the Dacian Wars, finished in 113 AD. What draws people here is the carved spiral band that winds up the shaft from base to top, showing scenes from the campaigns — soldiers on the march, building fortifications, in combat. It's a rare, continuous piece of Roman narrative art, and it still stands on its original site in Trajan's Forum, so you're looking at it more or less where it was erected.
Getting there
It sits in the heart of ancient Rome, an easy walk from Piazza Venezia — about 3-5 minutes on foot. From most central Rome hotels, expect a 15-20 minute walk, or a short bus or metro ride toward Colosseo/Fori Imperiali followed by a few minutes on foot.
How much time to allow
Fifteen to twenty minutes is enough to view the column and read the reliefs from ground level, longer if you linger over the carved detail or photograph it from different angles along Via dei Fori Imperiali.
When to go
Morning light works well for photos of the reliefs facing east. The column is visible from the street at any time, and the surrounding area gets busy with tour groups midday, especially in high season, so an early or late visit is quieter. There's no ticket or entry to manage — you view it from the forum's perimeter or the street.
What to combine it with
It sits right next to Trajan's Forum and the wider Imperial Fora (0.1-0.2km), all walkable in one stretch along Via dei Fori Imperiali. Piazza Venezia and the Altare della Patria are just a couple of minutes further (0.2km), making this whole area easy to cover on a single walk without backtracking.
