Understanding Cairo's Layout

Cairo is a sprawling metropolis that is best understood as a collection of distinct zones rather than a single center. For first-timers, focus on these three areas:

• Downtown Cairo: The colonial-era heart of the city with European-style architecture, shopping streets, and central hubs.
• Old Cairo & Islamic Cairo: Home to the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, historic mosques, and the Coptic Quarter. This area is dense and best explored on foot.

Arrival and Transportation
