Great Pyramid of Giza

What you'll see

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest of the three main pyramids on the plateau, built as a tomb for the pharaoh Khufu around 2560 BC. It's the only surviving structure from the traditional Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Most visitors come to stand at its base and take in the scale up close, and some choose to go inside the narrow internal passages to the burial chamber.

Getting there

The pyramid sits on the Giza Plateau on the western edge of Cairo. A taxi or ride-hailing app from central Cairo typically takes 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. Cairo International Airport (CAI) is on the opposite side of the city, so allow closer to an hour if arriving straight from the airport.

How long to spend

Plan for at least two to three hours to see the Great Pyramid itself and walk around the plateau. If you want to cover the other nearby monuments in the same visit, budget half a day.

When to go

Arrive early in the morning to avoid both the heat and the largest crowds, which build up through midday. The site gets busy with tour groups, so an early start also means clearer sightlines for photos. Midsummer heat can make walking around the open plateau uncomfortable in the afternoon.

Combine with

The Giza Plateau (0.4km) is essentially the same visit, giving you access to the wider site. The Pyramid of Khafre (0.5km) and The Great Sphinx (0.5km) are a short walk away and commonly seen together with the Great Pyramid. The Pyramid of Khentkaus I (0.6km) is also close by for those wanting to see a smaller, lesser-visited monument on the same trip.
