The Pyramids of Giza

The pyramids are the ancient stone tombs built for Egyptian pharaohs, standing on the Giza Plateau on the edge of Cairo. Most visitors come to see the Pyramid of Khufu (the largest of the three main pyramids), along with the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure, and to take in the scale of the structures and the surrounding desert plateau up close.

Getting there

From central Cairo, the plateau is reachable by taxi or ride-hailing app, typically taking 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. If flying in, Cairo International Airport (CAI) is on the opposite side of the city, so allow extra time for the transfer.

How long to spend

Plan for at least half a day to see the main pyramids, walk the plateau, and visit a viewpoint or two. Travelers combining this with the nearby sites below often spend a full day in the area.

When to go

Early morning is the coolest time to walk around the site and tends to be less crowded than midday. The desert setting means little shade, so summer heat can be intense in the middle of the day. Weekends and major holidays typically draw larger crowds.

Combine with nearby sites

  • Pyramid of Menkaure (0km) — the smallest of the three main pyramids, right at the same site.
  • Pyramid of Khafre (0.5km) — recognizable by the remaining casing stones near its summit.
  • Giza Plateau (0.6km) — the wider site including the Sphinx and surrounding desert terrain.
  • Pyramid of Khentkaus I (0.7km) — a smaller, less-visited monument nearby for those wanting to see more of the necropolis.

Since these are all within a kilometer of each other, they're easily covered in a single visit on foot or with a short ride between points.
