Abu Gorab

Abu Gorab is an archaeological site located on the west bank of the Nile, situated between Saqqara and Giza. It is primarily known for the sun temples constructed during the Old Kingdom in the 25th century BC. Visitors go here to see the remains of these structures, specifically the sun temple of King Nyuserre, which is the largest and best-preserved example remaining at the site.

Getting There

The site is located south of Cairo city centre. Access is typically via taxi or private hire vehicle from the city. The travel time varies depending on traffic conditions but generally takes around one hour.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately two to three hours to explore the ruins and the layout of the sun temples.

When to Visit

Early morning is recommended to avoid the midday heat of the desert. The cooler winter months are the most suitable season for visiting. The site is generally less crowded than the nearby Giza plateau.

Nearby Attractions

Due to its location, this site can be combined with other Old Kingdom monuments in the surrounding area:

  • Pyramid of Sahure: 1.1km
  • Pyramid of Userkaf: 4.1km
  • Pyramid of Djoser: 4.2km
  • Layer Pyramid: 4.5km
