Brancacci Chapel
What it is
The Brancacci Chapel is a side chapel inside the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine, decorated between 1425 and 1427 with a fresco cycle depicting scenes from the life of St. Peter. The paintings are mainly the work of Masaccio and Masolino, with later additions by Filippino Lippi, and the cycle is widely studied for its early use of perspective and naturalism. It's a stop for anyone interested in Renaissance painting rather than a general sightseeing highlight - the appeal is narrow but the works themselves are significant to art history.
Getting there
The chapel is in the Oltrarno district on the south side of the Arno. From the Duomo or Piazza della Signoria, it's about a 20-25 minute walk, or a short ride on local buses that cross into Oltrarno. Entry to see the frescoes is through the adjoining convent building rather than the main church door.
