When to Visit Fukuoka
Fukuoka has humid summers and short, mild winters, so the shoulder seasons give the most comfortable weather for walking around Hakata and Tenjin.
Spring (March–May)
Highs move from the low teens to mid-20s Celsius. Cherry blossoms usually peak in early April around Maizuru and Ohori Parks, drawing weekend crowds. Late April to early May overlaps with Golden Week, when flights from Korea and hotels tighten; early April avoids the worst of it.
Summer (June–August)
Mid-June to mid-July is rainy season, humid with sudden downpours. July–August turn hot and muggy, often above 30°C. Hakata Gion Yamakasa (July 1–15) fills hotels near Kushida Shrine, especially for the pre-dawn July 15 race. Typhoons can disrupt FUK flights from August into September.
Autumn (September–November)
September still carries typhoon risk, but October–November bring drier air and comfortable temperatures for covering Hakata and Tenjin by subway and on foot. Foliage in Ohori Park peaks in late November without spring-level crowds.
Winter (December–February)
Cool rather than cold, with occasional frost but rare snow. Days are short, though the compact core is easily seen in a few hours of daylight. Korean holidays like Seollal can still tighten seats and fares on FUK routes given the short flight time.
What to Pack
- Spring/autumn: layers plus a light rain shell
- Summer: breathable clothing, sun protection, a folding umbrella
- Winter: a mid-weight coat is enough
- Any season: comfortable shoes for the Hakata–Tenjin walking and subway route

Temples & religious sites
Fukuoka Mosque
Fukuoka Mosque (formally the Fukuoka Masjid Al-Noor Islamic Cultural Center) is a mosque in Hakozaki, Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City. It opened in April 2009 and is known as the first mosque in the Kyushu region.
Nature
Hakata Bay
Hakata Bay lies northwest of Fukuoka City on Kyushu, facing the Tsushima Strait. With beaches and a port close to downtown, it offers easy access to the sea from the city center, and much of its shoreline has been reclaimed over the course of urban expansion, so port facilities and parks now sit side by side along the coast.
Museums & galleries
Fukuoka Art Museum
The Fukuoka Art Museum holds both Western and Asian art, with rotating special exhibitions alongside its permanent collection. It has previously hosted major shows such as one on Chagall, and these exhibitions spotlighting particular artists or themes are often the main reason to visit. The museum sits inside Ohori Park, making it easy to combine with a stroll through the park.
Temples & religious sites
Shōfuku-ji Temple
Shōfuku-ji is a temple of the Myōshin-ji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism located in Kosho-machi, Hakata, and is known as Japan's oldest Zen temple. It was founded by Eisai with the patronage of Minamoto no Yoritomo, founder of the Kamakura shogunate, and a plaque said to be written by Yoritomo himself hangs at the temple's mountain gate.
