Getting Around Fukuoka

Fukuoka rewards walking more than most Japanese cities its size. The Hakata and Tenjin districts, where most visitors base themselves, sit only a few subway stops apart, and many sights within each district are reachable on foot. The subway matters most for jumping between these two hubs quickly or reaching areas like Ohori Park and the Momochi waterfront. Buses, mainly Nishitetsu routes, fill in where the subway doesn't go, though route numbers and stops take more effort to figure out than the subway map.

Passes and Tickets

• Subway one-day pass: worth it if you plan several rides across Hakata, Tenjin, and outlying stations in a single day; not worth it if you're mostly walking or making one or two short hops.
• IC card (SUGOCA, or Suica/ICOCA/Pasmo from elsewhere in Japan): the simplest option for casual, infrequent riders and works across subway, bus, and most convenience stores.

Airport to City

• Subway (Airport Line): fastest and least effort from the domestic terminal, running direct into Hakata Station.
• Bus: useful if you land at the international terminal, since a shuttle bus connects it to the domestic terminal and subway station; some buses also run directly into the city, better suited to those with heavy luggage.
• Taxi: highest cost band, best for late arrivals, large groups, or door-to-door convenience with luggage.

Practical Notes

• Weekday rush hours on the Hakata-Tenjin stretch get crowded in the morning and early evening.
• Last subway trains run around midnight; check the final departure if you're out late.
• Coin lockers are available at Hakata Station for luggage between check-in and check-out times.
• Major stations have elevators, but not every exit does, so step-free routes may require extra walking.
