Arrival and Transport

Most visitors arrive via Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). To get into the city:

• Prepaid Taxis/Ride-sharing: Use official prepaid taxi counters or app-based ride-sharing services. These are the most reliable options for airport transfers.
• Local Trains: The lifeline of the city. While efficient for long distances, they are extremely crowded during peak hours. Avoid them during rush hour if you have heavy luggage.
• Auto-rickshaws: These operate in the suburbs but are prohibited in South Mumbai. They are ideal for short, quick trips within suburban neighborhoods.

Common First-Timer Mistakes

Underestimating Traffic: Distance in kilometers does not equal time in Mumbai. A short distance can take an hour during peak traffic. Always allow extra time for appointments.

Over-scheduling: Trying to see the north and south in one day is exhausting. Instead, group your activities by district to minimize travel time.

Suggested First-Trip Itinerary

Focus on the core landmarks first to get a sense of the city's scale:

• Priority: Visit the Gateway of India, take a walk along Marine Drive, and explore the Colaba Causeway for shopping.
• Secondary: Visit the Dhobi Ghat (the world's largest open-air laundry) and the Mani Bhavan museum.
