Long Sơn Pagoda

Long Sơn Pagoda

Long Sơn Temple is a Buddhist temple in the city of Nha Trang on South Central Coast of Vietnam. It is regarded as one of the main sites in the city, along with Hai Duc Temple.

What it is

Long Sơn Pagoda is a working Buddhist temple in central Nha Trang, first established in the late 19th century and rebuilt over the years, with mosaic dragon columns and tiled courtyards typical of Vietnamese temple architecture. Above the temple grounds, a stairway climbs the hill to a large white seated Buddha statue that overlooks the city, which is the main reason most visitors make the trip up.

Getting there

The pagoda sits close to central Nha Trang, a short taxi or ride-hailing trip from the beachfront hotels, typically around 10-15 minutes depending on traffic. It's also within walking distance of some downtown areas if you don't mind the heat.

How long to spend

Allow around 45 minutes to an hour to look around the temple grounds and climb the stairs to the hilltop Buddha. The climb involves a few hundred steps, so pace yourself, especially in the midday sun.

When to go

Go earlier in the morning to avoid the heat on the open stairway and the stronger midday sun at the hilltop viewpoint. As an active temple, it can see a steady flow of visitors and local worshippers throughout the day, so quieter moments are more likely outside midday hours.

Combine it with

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Nha Trang and Christ the King Cathedral are both under a kilometre away, making it easy to pair a temple visit with a look at the city's cathedral. The Yersin Museum, about 1.7km off, and the Cái Nha Trang River area, roughly 2km away, are also reachable on the same outing if you have half a day free.
