The Yui Rail monorail only covers Naha and the airport. Everywhere else needs a rental car, so pick a base by drive time, not rail proximity.

Staying near a Yui Rail station (Omoromachi, Asahibashi, Kokusai-dori) gives an easy airport transfer plus supermarkets, pharmacies, and clinics on foot. Good for young children or days without a car. Naha has few swimming beaches, so plan day trips or a later move north for the water.

Chatan and the central west coast

About 30-40 minutes from the airport, this stretch mixes casual dining, shopping, and calmer swimming beaches. It suits a walkable evening scene without a full resort stay, and works as a midpoint before the north.

Onna Village and the northern resort coast

Onna and areas toward Nago hold most of the larger family resorts, with pools, kids' clubs, and direct beach access, suiting several nights in one place. It is an hour or more from the airport, so a car is essential and a supermarket stop en route is worth planning.

What to check before booking

• Beach type: natural reef beaches can have coral and currents; man-made or netted beaches suit small children better.
• Kids' facilities: not every property has a children's pool or club, even at resort rates.
• Room setup: connecting rooms or a kitchenette for infants.
• Nearby supermarket or pharmacy, since remote resorts can be a drive away.
