How does Okinawa's transport work for a first-time visitor?

Getting oriented in Okinawa

Okinawa is less a city than a long, narrow island, and what you'll want to see is spread across it. Think in three zones: Naha, the capital where you'll likely base yourself; the central west coast around Chatan and Yomitan, known for beaches and American Village; and the north around Nago and Motobu, home to Churaumi Aquarium. Each zone can be an hour or more from the next by car.

Naha itself

Orient around Kokusai-dori, the main shopping street, with Tsuboya's pottery lanes and Makishi Public Market nearby. Shuri, home to Shuri Castle, sits inland and feels separate, though reachable by monorail.

Airport to city, and getting around

Naha Airport (OKA) sits close to central Naha. The Yui Rail monorail runs from the airport through Naha up to Shuri, so hotels and sights on that line don't need a car.

Beyond Naha, there is no rail. The aquarium, beach towns on the central west coast, and the north all require a rental car, bus, or taxi. If plans go outside Naha and Shuri, arrange a car in advance.

What first-timers get wrong

• Assuming the monorail covers the island. It only links the airport to Naha and Shuri.
• Underestimating driving time. The island is long, roads run single-lane through towns, and travel adds up.
• Trying to cover the whole island in one short trip. The north and outer islands deserve a dedicated visit.
• Booking a rental car late. Demand near Naha Airport is high in peak season.

A sensible first trip

Base your first stretch in or near Naha, using the Yui Rail for Kokusai-dori, Tsuboya, and Shuri Castle. Once you have a rental car, take a day or overnight trip north toward Motobu and Churaumi Aquarium, stopping along the central-west coast on the way. Save remote beaches and outer islands for a return visit once you know the distances involved.
