Getting around Osaka
Osaka Metro's eight lines cover most in-city journeys, with Namba, Umeda and Shinsaibashi acting as the main interchange hubs. Staying near one of these keeps most rides short and often walkable instead. The JR Osaka Loop Line is useful for skirting the city edge and linking to JR stations, while private railways matter mainly for leaving the city: Hankyu from Umeda toward Kyoto and Kobe, Kintetsu from Namba toward Nara, and Nankai from Namba toward Kansai Airport.
Passes and tickets
- ICOCA IC card: tap in and out on nearly all trains, subways and buses. Suits almost every visitor; no discount, just convenience.
- Osaka Metro one-day pass: worth it only if making several subway trips in a single day. It does not cover JR or private lines, so it is no help for Kyoto or Nara day trips.
- Osaka Amazing Pass: bundles subway travel with entry to a list of attractions. Only pays off if you are actually visiting several of those sights the same day.
Airport to city (KIX)
- Nankai Airport Express (Rapi:t): direct to Namba, the quickest low-effort option for that area.
- JR Haruka limited express: direct to Shin-Osaka or Tennoji, best if continuing straight to Kyoto.
- Limousine bus: slower due to traffic but drops closer to hotel clusters, easier with heavy luggage.
- Taxi: highest cost band, no transfers, most practical late at night or with mobility needs.
Practical notes
Weekday morning and evening rush hours are heaviest on the Midosuji line through Umeda and Namba. Trains and subways stop running around midnight, so plan late nights around the last departure. Coin lockers are available at major stations but fill up on weekends. Elevators exist at most stations but not every exit, so step-free routes may require walking further to a specific gate.

Views & landmarks
Abeno Harukas
Abeno Harukas, located in Osaka's Abeno Ward, is a 300-meter, 62-story mixed-use complex that was Japan's tallest building from 2014 to 2023. It houses a department store, offices, and a hotel, but for travelers the main draw is the observation deck near the top.
Temples & religious sites
Shitennō-ji Temple
Shitennoji is a Buddhist temple in Osaka considered one of Japan's oldest state-administered temples. It has also been known by several other names, including Arahakaji, Naniwa-daiji, and Mitsuji, and has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries by fire and war, with the current buildings dating from a 1963 reconstruction.
Theme parks
Universal Studios Japan
Universal Studios Japan, in Osaka, is a theme park based on Hollywood films and animation, and the first Universal Studios park built outside the United States. Beyond the rides, much of the fun comes from walking through streets recreating movie sets and franchise-themed areas, so it's especially worthwhile for travelers who are fans of specific franchises like Super Nintendo World or Harry Potter.
Views & landmarks
Umeda Sky Building
The Umeda Sky Building is a striking complex made up of two 40-story towers linked by a glass bridge at the top. Escalators and elevators run through the bridge, carrying visitors across the open atrium space between the two towers.
