How should I plan my first trip to Osaka, Japan?

Getting your bearings

Osaka splits into districts worth knowing before you book. Minami (south) covers Namba, Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi — a dense, walkable area of restaurants and covered arcades, and where most first-timers base themselves. Kita (north) centers on Umeda, home to the JR Osaka Station complex and department stores. Osaka Castle Park sits between the two, and Shin-Osaka, a short ride north of Umeda, is where shinkansen trains arrive — useful for connections, not for staying. Kyoto and Nara are close enough to treat as day trips rather than separate bases.

Airport and getting around

Kansai International Airport (KIX) sits on an island south of the city. Two operators run trains in: JR's Kansai Airport Line (Haruka express toward Shin-Osaka/Kyoto, or the slower Rapid service toward central Osaka) and Nankai Electric Railway's line into Namba, including the Rapi:t express. Staying near Namba, Nankai is usually more direct. Osaka Metro's eight lines cover most sightseeing, with the Midosuji line running north-south through Umeda, Shinsaibashi and Namba — the three interchange hubs. Get a rechargeable IC card at the airport instead of single tickets.

What first-timers get wrong

• Fitting Osaka, Kyoto and Nara into one rushed day — each deserves its own day trip from a fixed base.
• Riding the subway between Namba, Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi, which are close enough to walk.
• Booking a hotel far from Namba, Umeda or Shinsaibashi, then losing time on transfers daily.
• Confusing "Osaka Station" (JR) with "Umeda Station" (subway/private rail) — same area, different entrances.

A sensible first-trip shape

Spend day one around Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi and Namba on foot. Use day two for Osaka Castle Park and Umeda. Treat Kyoto and Nara as separate day trips rather than cramming them in — both leave time for an evening back in Minami.
