This is one of Rome's four papal basilicas and one of the oldest churches in the city, with an interior built largely on a 5th-century layout. Travelers come for the mosaics along the nave, which date from that early period and are among the oldest surviving Christian mosaics in Rome, as well as the coffered Renaissance ceiling and the ornate Cappella Paolina. It's a working church of pilgrimage significance, not just a monument, so it draws both visitors and worshippers.
Getting there
It sits near Termini station, roughly a 10-15 minute walk from the station or from Rome's historic centre depending on your starting point. Metro lines A and B both stop at Termini, and several bus routes pass nearby, so it's easy to reach without a car.
Time to allow
Most visitors spend 30-45 minutes inside taking in the mosaics and side chapels. Add extra time if you want to look closely at the chapel decoration or sit for a while, since it's a large, quiet space compared to some of Rome's busier churches.
When to go
Mornings tend to be calmer than midday, when tour groups and pilgrimage groups pass through. It draws less of a crowd than St. Peter's Basilica, but can still fill up around religious feast days and services, so avoid those times if you want a quieter visit.

- Servian Wall (0.5km) - a short stretch of Rome's ancient defensive wall, an easy add-on nearby.
- San Pietro in Vincoli (0.6km) - another historic church, a walkable stop on the same outing.
- Domus Aurea (0.7km) - Nero's former palace complex, worth planning ahead for since visits often require booking.
- Trajan's Forum (1.1km) - part of the Imperial Forums, a reasonable walk further toward the historic centre.
