Where to Stay in Sapporo for Easy Access to Odori, Sapporo Station and the Subway
August 2, 2026 · last updated · about 4 min read
Choosing where to stay in central Sapporo
Sapporo's sights sit inside a compact ring, so a station-linked base covers most of it on foot or by subway. The Namboku, Tozai and Toho lines meet at Odori Station, and Sapporo Station one stop north is the terminus for the JR Rapid Airport train from New Chitose Airport (CTS). Basing yourself between these two hubs removes most transfer planning.
Sapporo Station area
The arrival point: JR trains, the airport Rapid train, long-distance buses, and the Namboku/Toho subway lines converge here. Good for minimising walking with luggage and for day trips by JR. Odori Park is a few minutes' walk or one subway stop away.
Odori area
Odori sits at the junction of all three subway lines, beside Odori Park and close to the TV Tower, the main Snow Festival venue, and Tanukikoji arcade. It suits travellers who prioritise subway coverage over direct JR access, and works well in winter since the surrounding area connects through underground passages.
Susukino area
One stop south of Odori on the Namboku/Toho lines, Susukino is Sapporo's dining district. It fits travellers wanting food options within walking distance in the evening, though rooms facing the main strip can be noisier.
What to check before booking
- Which subway line and exit the property is nearest to, and whether it reaches your planned sights without transferring
- Distance to Sapporo Station's JR concourse if arriving on the airport train with luggage
- Whether the walk from the station uses the underground pedestrian network, useful once snow is on the ground
- Street-facing rooms near Susukino if evening noise matters
When to visit
Snow covers the city roughly December to March, and the Snow Festival in early February brings the tightest availability near Odori. Summer is cool and mild with steadier availability. For winter dates, book early regardless of area.
