How to plan your first trip to Sapporo, Japan

Getting your bearings in Sapporo

Sapporo is built on a grid, which makes it one of the easier Japanese cities to navigate on foot. Think of it in two connected zones: Sapporo Station to the north, and Odori and Susukino to the south. Most sightseeing, dining, and shopping sits within walking distance of these two hubs, linked by underground passages that are useful in bad weather.

Arriving from New Chitose Airport

New Chitose Airport (CTS) connects to the city center by a direct train, the Rapid Airport service, which runs to Sapporo Station with no transfers needed. It's the default way in and out of the city.

Getting around once you're there

Sapporo's subway has three lines, and they all radiate outward from the Odori/Sapporo Station core. If you're spending most of your time in that central radius, you'll rarely need more than a short subway hop or a walk through the underground network. Save the subway for sights further out; the center itself is compact enough to cover on foot.

What first-timers usually get wrong

A common mistake is treating Sapporo Station and Odori as separate destinations needing a taxi, when they're a manageable walk apart via the underground passage. Another is underestimating the weather: winter cold and summer layering both catch visitors off guard, so dress for the season. Some visitors also plan trips outside the city before getting oriented centrally first.

A sensible shape for a first trip

Spend your first day or two within the Odori-to-Sapporo-Station radius, getting used to the grid and the underground links between them. Once oriented, use the subway lines to branch out further. Save longer regional trips for later in your stay, after the city center feels familiar.
