When to Visit Sapporo

Sapporo has four distinct seasons, and the best time depends on whether you want snow, mild weather, or fewer crowds. Odori and Sapporo Station form a compact centre, covered by three subway lines year-round.

Winter (December-February)

Snow cover is consistent, days are short, and temperatures stay well below freezing. This is peak season: the Sapporo Snow Festival in early February fills Odori Park with sculptures and draws heavy crowds, with tighter lodging near Odori and Susukino.

Spring (April-May)

Snow melts through April; cherry blossoms usually appear late April into early May, later than most of Japan. Weather stays cool early on. Crowds are lighter than winter or summer, good for walking Odori Park without festival congestion.

Summer (June-August)

Summers are cooler and less humid than mainland Japan, drawing travellers escaping the heat. June brings the Yosakoi Soran dance festival; late July into August has the Summer Festival with beer gardens in Odori Park. This second peak season fills trains and lodging.

Autumn (September-November)

Air cools steadily and foliage colours the parks from around mid-October, later than Honshu. Early autumn suits walking; by November, snow can return and crowds thin out.

Prices and Crowds

Early February and late July through August bring the busiest subways and tightest lodging, tied to the Snow and Summer Festivals. November sits between seasons, unsettled before snow settles in.

What to Pack

  • Winter: waterproof boots with grip for ice, heavy layers, hand warmers.
  • Spring/Autumn: layered clothing for cool mornings, milder afternoons.
  • Summer: light layers plus a jacket for cooler evenings.

The airport train from CTS to Sapporo Station keeps timing flexible; plan dates around festivals, not transport.
